Compass has not been field tested yet. The level bubble rests in the center on mine when in the horizontal position. The enclosure is mostly metal with some plastic parts. The optical eyepiece is a nice feature. I like the pouch for storing the compass. There is much for me to learn on how to use every feature on this compass. For basic navigation, it does the job. It is another item that is stored in my get home bag.
This is a very nice compass built well.
Needed this for BLC. It's pretty accurate.
Very convenient to use.
Like it very much.
This is NOT a functional compass. The dial is literally a piece of tin set on a needle, you would be better with floating a needle in a cup of water.
Getting lost while trekking or walking through a dense trail is perhaps our biggest fear. Handheld GPS, or Smartphones come in handy but they will be not functional if out of battery or signal. Therefore, having an “old-school” compass is crucial when you’re out in nature: on-trail or off. The EK-01 is one of our best lensatic compasses that are extremely easy to use while moving through unknown terrains. It has been tried and tested through some of the most extreme experiments, suitable for use in extreme weather conditions and environments, it will be a very powerful tool for your adventures together with an appropriate map.
• Accurate measurement of directions
• Optical reading of card for higher accuracy
• Thermo-elastic liquid-filled housing with floating dial
• Scale: Azimuth 360°, Reversed 360°
• High-resolution rotating bezel ring
• Threads for a tripod mount for stable operation
• Built-in bubble level
• Sighting lines on the cover
• Durable and sturdy outer body casing for rough handling
• Extreme weather condition usability
• Conversion chart for angle, gradient & distance on the backplate
A compass for hiking must be durable because there is a high possibility it will get bumped in your backpack or fall on the ground at some point. To ensure durability, EK-01 compass has an anodized Zinc Alloy metal housing, and is proofed to resist harmful conditions, such as sand particles or being emerged in water.
The needle should point to the north immediately and with ease. Even if you’re hiking leisurely, bad weather can come on fast and you’ll want a needle that settles fast. EK-01 compass is liquid-filled and has a Saphire jewel bearing, allows the needle to move freely, and keeps it from twitching when you’re taking readings.
If you're hiking in low temperatures such as cold winter, or in hot temperatures like the desert, you want to make sure your compass can keep up. The working temperature of EK-01 compass is -30° C to +60° C / -22° F to +140° F, ensured the liquid does not freeze or produce bubbles inside.
